Filter bodies for mechanical impurities are most commonly equipped with washable filter inserts made of polypropylene. The surface of these inserts is either made of a classic mesh or, in more recent times, an increasingly popular version where the fibers are thermally "needled" into the desired porosity. In the case of inserts made of stainless steel, the skeleton is woven from stainless steel wires or the holes are laser-cut into a smooth sheet. The mesh sizes range from 80 to 100 µm.
Disposable standard filter inserts are usually wound from cotton fibers to capture impurities ranging in size from 1 to 80 µm. However, these organic material filter inserts are not recommended for drinking water, as they can become a source of unpleasant microbiological contamination if regular replacement is neglected.
In some cases, for example in larger hot water heaters, it is necessary to filter warmer water as well. For this purpose, all-metal filters with stainless steel filter inserts are used, equipped with one or two pressure gauges to monitor the clogging of the filter insert. The water we use for water supply, regardless of its source, always contains a certain amount of mechanical particles, which are captured by standard filters, as well as dissolved substances, which can be removed by specialized column filters.
